UP NISMED has been at the forefront of promoting lesson study as a school-based professional development for teachers especially in science and mathematics. Its researchers have also been participating in World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) annual conferences to share some of its lesson study works and research. This year, one of its mathematics education specialists shared her lesson study research in WALS 2020 Online Conference held last 2-4 December 2020. Dr. Erlina Ronda presented the initial result of her research that involves using a research-based framework called the Mathematics Discourse in Instruction (MDI) framework for analyzing and designing the research lesson. Initial results of the research showed that the theory-informed lesson study focuses teachers’ attention on the quality of mathematics that is made available to learn in their lesson. An offshoot of the study is a professional development that will train mathematics teachers on how to use the framework for their lesson study and for writing self-learning modules for learners.
