The programs of UP NISMED bring science and mathematics to life by empowering teachers, inspiring learners, and connecting communities through innovative, collaborative, and hands-on experiences.
The KaSaMa Teachers Community is an online professional learning community for science and mathematics teachers where they connect, share resources, and learn from one another. It provides access to teaching materials, webinars, mentoring, and discussions that support teachers in improving their practice, especially in the K–12 curriculum. Designed as a technology-enabled and collaborative space, it promotes continuous professional development through “bayanihan” (collective support), helping educators stay updated, exchange ideas, and strengthen science and mathematics education in the Philippines.
The GeoGebra education program of UP NISMED focuses on helping mathematics teachers integrate digital tools to improve teaching and learning. Through trainings, workshops, and courses such as GeoGebra Basics, teachers learn how to use GeoGebra software to create interactive graphs, visualizations, and dynamic mathematical activities. The program also promotes collaboration among educators, supports the development of teaching materials, and encourages the use of technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills.
The Go Teacher Go! is an educational radio program designed to support science and mathematics teachers. Broadcast through DZUP, it provides teachers with practical teaching strategies, lesson ideas, and explanations of difficult concepts to improve classroom instruction. The program features experts and experienced educators who discuss innovative methods such as inquiry-based science and problem-solving in mathematics, while also addressing common student misconceptions. Overall, it serves as an accessible and continuous professional development platform that helps teachers enhance their knowledge and teaching practices through media.
The stargazing program of UP NISMED is an outreach activity that allows students, teachers, and the public to learn about astronomy through actual observation of the night sky. Conducted at the UP NISMED Observatory, the program combines short lectures with telescope viewing sessions where participants can see celestial objects like the Moon, planets, stars, and other phenomena. It is usually held during selected months or special events, and aims to make Earth and Space Science more engaging by giving participants hands-on experience in observing astronomical objects using modern telescopes.
The Lesson Study programs of UP NISMED are a form of collaborative professional development where teachers work together to improve their teaching. In this approach, a group of teachers jointly plans a lesson, observes how it is taught and how students respond, and then discusses the results to refine and enhance the lesson. This cycle may be repeated to further improve teaching strategies, with the goal of deepening teachers’ understanding of student learning and strengthening instruction in science and mathematics through continuous, shared reflection.
